The Addams Family

The Addams Family, Hair & Makeup

My role as the hair and makeup designer for HITS Theatre's productions of The Addams Family extended beyond design, focusing on educating and inspiring our young performers. To start, I initiated a presentation for the students, emphasizing the importance of hygiene in the makeup process, shared my application tips, and offered inspiration for their makeup looks. It was crucial to establish a foundation of knowledge that would empower them to bring their characters to life with confidence.

Throughout the process, the young actors were given the freedom to explore their artistic instincts. While they enjoyed the autonomy to express their creativity, my team and I were readily available to provide assistance, guidance, and additional inspiration when needed. This collaborative effort ensured that each performer felt a sense of ownership over their character's appearance. Through character study sessions, we encouraged them to delve into the psychology of their roles. For example, the Ancestor characters participated in exercises contemplating how their assigned characters might have met their demise. This exploration influenced their makeup choices, allowing them to authentically embody the essence of their characters.

The production not only showcased the exciting results of our collective efforts but also highlighted the transformative power of makeup and hair design. The young performers not only embraced their roles with enthusiasm but also gained valuable insights into the profound impact that attention to detail can have on character portrayal. This experience goes beyond the stage, offering these budding artists a foundation for their future creative endeavors in the theatrical realm.
